It's admirable but I pray the politics involved in this work for safer better prisons. I read about a guy who needed mental health. He kept cutting himself n putting things in his anus he was ill but remains in closed conditions when he should be in a mental health bed. We need change drastically fast before more suicides. I'm not a violent man but I stand by my convictions n say if we need another strangeways to get heard then so b it. Vas your humble follower advocating change n rehabilitation. Both were slated for closure at the end of 2014 which would have left the female estate in chaos as it would have meant no female life or IPP could ever have been released as they are required to spend time at an open prison before release even if they have spent time on a resettlement wing such as at HMP Send. However I believe a legal challenge was brought which means they may not be closing.

A radical rethink of the female estate especially open conditions is needed. Both open prisons are far from ideal being in the middle of nowhere with little or no access to public transport (ESP's nearest bus stop is a very brisk 35 minutes away) making it difficult for work, privacy is non existent with up to 8 sharing a room which makes it a very stressful environment in which to live, staff leave a hell of a lot to be desired as it is clear that they, just like the press, thoroughly resent any prisoner in open conditions no matter how hard they may have worked to get there, resettlement provision is as crap as it is in any closed prison i.e. pretty non existent and both prisons have far too many short term prisoners there who whilst they may be low risk cannot benefit from open conditions as they go home on tag before they are eligible for ROTL which prevent those who actually do need to be in open conditions as part of their journey towards release from getting to open conditions.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623255227619374869.post-80910271744917740862014-12-28T12:06:48.876+00:002014-12-28T12:06:48.876+00:00Thanks for the recommendation. As is being noted in the latest reports by HM Inspectorate of Prisons, I do think that 23-hour bang-up is becoming more common as a direct result of the combination of overcrowding and understaffing. Neither of these is the fault of either prisoners nor frontline staff, both of which have to live and work with the consequences. My own view is that people on both sides of the door can contribute to the wider debate over imprisonment and its outcomes.

As I've written on this blog before, I'm personally opposed to violence inside prisons because in the end that just sets two groups who aren't responsible for the mess politicians are making of the system against each other. Yes, it is true that awkward or stroppy folk can be found on wings (both cons and screws), but on the whole the majority on both sides understand that life is safer and more productive without conflict. In most prison riots, it's cons who tend to get injured of even killed (often by fellow inmates settling scores).

The real battles need to be fought outside prisons by campaigners and activists, trade unionists, professional bodies (including the POA and PGA), ex-prisoners, sympathetic politicians and progressive journalists. Above all we need to inform the general public about what the factual situation is like inside our prisons and to get broad-based support for positive reform.

If we had less people sent to prison in the first place (especially nov-violent, low riskers and people with mental health issues), we could reduce the current overcrowding and greatly improve the rehabilitation and education provision. Above all, we need to take a long hard look at all the privatisation and outsourcing. What doesn't deliver needs to be scrapped and replaced.
